Community gathering
Our story

We built the platform we wanted to exist.

Not another feed. Not another algorithm. A place where communities are earned, not gamed.

The origin

Reddit used to be the internet's front page. Now it's the internet's billboard.

We grew up on forums. On subreddits. On places where the best reply won, not the most upvoted one. Where a niche community about 1970s Italian horror films could exist right next to a community about competitive dog grooming — and both were treated with the same dignity.

Then the feeds got optimized. The algorithms got smarter. The engagement bait got louder. The moderators burned out. The good communities migrated to Discord and disappeared behind invite links. The rest got drowned in noise.

We started Checkd because we missed what the internet used to feel like. Not nostalgic — just honest. Communities that exist because people care about them, not because they drive ad revenue.

The manifesto

What we actually believe.

01

Communities are earned.

A Checkmark isn't handed out. It's built. You show up, you contribute, you earn your place. There's no shortcut, no paid promotion, no algorithm that surfaces you because you posted at 9am on a Tuesday.

02

The feed is a lie.

Algorithmic feeds optimize for engagement, not quality. We don't have one. You subscribe to communities you care about. You see what they post. That's it. Chronological, honest, yours.

03

Moderation is a craft.

The best communities have great moderators. We give them real tools, real support, and real authority. Not a report button and a prayer.

04

Niche is a feature.

The best conversations happen in small rooms. We're not trying to be everything to everyone. We're trying to be the right place for the people who care deeply about specific things.

05

No engagement bait.

No streaks. No notification badges designed to trigger anxiety. No dark patterns. If you come back, it's because something good is happening — not because we guilted you into it.

Why Checkd is different

Not a Reddit clone. Not a Discord alternative. Something new.

Checkmarks, not subreddits

Communities on Checkd are called Checkmarks. They have a slug, a culture, and a reputation. ck/film is not the same as r/movies. It's smaller, more opinionated, and better for it.

Reputation travels with you

Your standing in one Checkmark doesn't automatically transfer to another. You earn trust in each community separately. Cross-community reputation is visible but not transferable.

Built for depth, not breadth

We're not trying to be the front page of the internet. We're trying to be the back room of the internet — where the real conversations happen after the crowd goes home.

The team

We're a small team with a strong opinion.

We've worked at social platforms, community tools, and media companies. We've seen what breaks communities from the inside. We're building Checkd to fix it.
